Right, all you grease monkeys... whats going on here..

I've got a Mk3 Golf GTi, 8v, 2L petrol.

When it idles, I can hear a noise in around the gearbox / clutch that sounds like gears moving.

When I put the clutch in, the noise goes away.

Is it -
1) Knackered clutch (used to slip but is fine now ?!)
2) Knackered gearbox
3) gearbox idle gear knackered

How much would it cost to fix something like that?

clutch thrust bearing on a normal car but golfs have a funny clutch setup with a big long rod which acts as a thrust bearing type thing (hard to explain) , it could be clutch rattling or worn gearbox but would need to listen to it first Thumbs Up! have you checked the box oil level ?

starter motor drive pinion not retracting fully? the play in an old flywheel could be enough for it to be moved out of the way when the clutch is dropped against it

does it definitely sound like gears? just a tangent as it seems all obvious answers have been discussed, but the aerial cable and various parts of the loom are secured pretty badly in mk3's. could be that there's a cable rattling against a panel somewhere with a deceptive sound. or a hamster in the crankcase
