I'd look at the FTO. The manual MIVECs are rather good.

Primera GTs are very cheap and good cars. Almera/Sunny GTIs are also nice though really need some decent suspension to get the best from them.

Mazda 323GTX/R - R's are the nicest but I think that the GTXs are overlooked. Great little cars and the engine was used (sort of) in the MX5 so parts shouldn't be too hard.

Mitsi Colt Cyborg R - sort of like a (old jap spec) Civic Type R. Mental 1.6. If the engine goes pop then just drop an early model evo lump in for big wheelspins.

Toyota Starlet - 1.3 turbo

Some of these may be too old (we have quite an old fleet of cars on the road here), but here are some ideas:

GTO - big and expensive to run, I think people cant give these away now, so thirsty
FTO - try and get the v6
MX3 - maybe be too old
MX6 - ditto
Lancer GSR - not sure if you get these much, non 4wd, seem quite popular here
Primera GT - again, seem quite popular for some reason
Celica GT - maybe 4 wheel steer versions
Prelude - already mentioned
Soarer - possibly too expensive (oops RWD)
Levin or Trueno - fun to drive, some have super-strut suspension
Altezza - toyota badged Lexus (or is that the other way around) (oops RWD)

willkeep my thinking cap on Cool

Pumas. Yup they are awfull to look at and based on a fiesta. However I have been informed that they are infact amazingly fun to drive, and are one of the best handling FWD cars you can buy. Yup im as suprised as you are.

I'd prefer an FTO over a GTO personally.

Your probably right about Puma's I've heard the same.

For 2-3k you could probably pick up an early evo, but insurance on an early evo is a pain in the rear... I should know.

As has been suggested I'd speak to Adam bout his wagon, 4WD ftw!

I know its a little premature because I dont know what the insurance will say about my MR2 but Im guessing its going to be time to find a new car. Im looking for something a little safter than my 2, so probably FWD or AWD, perhaps with ABS & airbags. Having a crash has made me sensible! Lol.

My current shortlist is below, and I know this is a jap club but im not ruling out non-jap cars.

Mitso FTO
Fiat Coupe
Alfa GTV
Ford Puma
Hyundai Coupe
Celica

My ideal car would probably be an Evo, Scoobie, or a Teg, but my budget is only 2k, or 3k at a real stretch.

Any thoughts? I dont want anything too "chavy" like a Civic or a Pug, and im used to a nice small chuckable car so don't want anything barge-like.

Got Proxes 4 on my Scooby. Blinding in the dry, virtually unstickable. Not too shabby in the wet, find the slides quite managable and to be honest, pretty good fun.

Know a couple of people with the new Yoko's on. They say they are fooookin lethal in the wet, almost undrivable in heavier rain Shocked

Falkans are a great choice, really good wet and dry. The only down side is lack of rim protection (not that kind either Rolling Eyes ) that's why so many cars imported from Japan arrive with Falkans on, because they are a cracking all round tyre.

well, have to say, i dont agree.

i have Proxes T1-R's and they are awesome in the wet, keeps the rear in order in my mr2.

i know loads of other mr2 owners who swear by them aswell, and not just the NA boys but the tubby lads too...

could they just not be very good on different cars?

heard abou this on sunday, very sad. Dont give up on the mr2s yet mate, they are great cars, i wish i hadnt sold mine now!!! to be honest, without wishing to make your day any worse, mismatched tyres on the back of a 2 is asking for trouble, but anyway, as you say, live and learn.
The mk1 is a great handling car and a lot of fun, even in the wet, if shod appropriately, basically, what i am trying to say, badly, is dont give up, i know its scary and makes you wonder if you should really drive a car such as this, cos when i did almost the same thing in my mr2 i thought exactly the same, but i dont regret getting back in it one bit. I was just a tad more cautious!!!
dont give up, you will not regret it! Thumbs Up!

Thanks for coming guys and for organising it Nick Thumbs Up!

Certainly was a great day for boosted cars though ! Those intake temps were great Cool

Shame about your car though Hails, wanted it to go well for you Sad But please ask your engine builder about the crankcase pressure, shouldn't really be blowing dipsticks out whether the dipstick is knackered or not Smile

Thanks for the comments about the workshop, I'm amazed how often people say 'we didn't know you were here !' But I'll be making amends, for a start there's a new website currently in the making Wink

Austec and AFR are all car enthusiasts too, and you will generally find us relaxed and easy to deal with Smile

As for the dyno, well it produced sensible numbers all morning. The only thing to watch for is sometimes we dyno in 5th to aid traction, but as this isn't 1:1 gearing it will throw out your transmission loss figures. But where runs were done in 1:1 (4th for a 5speed) the losses were all sensible. ...

We are now seeing some cars that have been imported, cannot be registered for road use and are going cheap - so was thinking 'can these be shipped to UK'? All will be over 10 years old.

SVA is only needed on cars under 10 years old and it can be a right beep to get a car through the test, if the seat belts, headlights and so on don't have a eu mark its a fail!! so all the parts need changing and if the car was never sold in the uk sometimes they just wont pass
