OFFLINE

Hi guys,

Been lurking for about a year now. Been to one or two meets down on Madeira Drive on a Monday but i tend to be busy with work a lot in the week.

I bought the car to track and race it in February last year after years of riding and competing on motorbikes; Supermoto, Motocross and Enduros. I am getting old and am sick of the injuries! In my mid-thirties, the bones were taking longer to heal and my business was doing well; suddenly weeks off at a time were not such a good idea.

I am a member of Brighton & Hove Motor Club and will be at the Speed Trials competing this year, as i was last year.

The car was mostly finished when i got it, but the work has continued to make it into what it is now.

Its a 94 Type R with a street-ported engine built by WGT. A T04E blower which has been modded to take the largest compressor wheel it can (after the original let go at Rockingham last October) means we have 420 horses at the flywheel to play with. A WGT V-Mount IC/Rad kit takes care of cooling (as the car used to be fine on the road but overheat on track due to the IC being in front of the rad). Water injection has also been added to keep the motor happy.

.

The standard brakes weren't up to track work either so they've been changed for 6-pot APs which are stunning, combined with Pagid race pads.

New Tein Mono Flex have just been fitted (as the old Tein HAs were getting on a bit), along with a full geometry set-up by Wheels-in-Motion, who i can highly recommend. It has a Cusco six-point roll cage fitted to aid with the structural rigidity, and strut braces front and rear.

R-Magic fibreglass bonnet and a £2000 Re-Amemiya carbon fibre tailgate with perspex 'glass' start the weight-saving. Lightweight Recaro SPG seats carry it on, as does the removal of all the interior behind the seats. The car now weighs 1200kgs with half a tank of fuel.

It wears its BBS LMs for the track now, and i have a new set of Volk Rays TE37s for it for the street. I haven't taken a picture of them on the car yet sadly so you'll have to put up with my idiot cats playing with them in the hallway.

.

Last years Speed Trials in Brighton saw off the Exedy single-plate clutch which let go spectacularly in 4th gear on the timed run. I still did a 13.07 but it was damned annoying. With my handicap i came 6th. If only the clutch hadn't gone....anyway, it now has an OS Giken twin-plate which is much lighter on the pedal, but has a tendency to be snatchy when the car gets hot.

I wanted more than just trackdays this year so i have started Sprinting. Its a cheaper form of racing than 'doorhandling' with other cars and is safer for the car; you are against the clock and therefore yourself. Though your are out on track with other cars, they send you out at intervals. If you catch the guy in front you have been 'baulked' and you get another run. Its less track time than a trackday but easier on the car because of it, and more exciting because of the pressure to perform in a relatively short space of time.

In June i went to Lydden and competed. I'd been there in September last year on a track day. You only get three laps for practice, then three timed runs of a lap and three quarters, from a standing start. It was a close thing, i ended up beating some Time Attack Scooby with money dripping from it by less than a second, mostly i think because he binned it on the first run. Of my class, i was the only one to stay on the track for all three of my runs! As racers know, to finish first you must first finish so i ignored my mates taking the piss and started slow and worked up. My 2nd timed run was enough to clinch it.

Feeling pretty groovy about this, but next was the big one. The Brighton & Hove Motor Club Sprint at Goodwood. With all my mates from the Motor Club, i was among good competition. It was last Saturday. I hadn't been to Goodwood since i was 17 and had a go in a mates Vauxhall Nova that he let me borrow for 3 laps. That wasn't going to cut it so i went to a track day there a few weeks ago to learn the place, as i had with Lydden. I believe in the seven P's:

'Proper planning and preparation prevent piss-poor performance'

Thats why i try to trackday at somewhere before i sprint there. Stops any 'enthusiasm overtaking your experience' moments that lead to crashed cars. Embarassed

This was a different setup to Lydden. Practice is two laps. Then two runs of one lap, standing start. It was wet for practice, then damp for the first run. I was 9 seconds behind the fastest car, with about 6 people in front of me! Then the sun came out and i went mental for the last run. Mad

Thumbs Up! The two trophies you see are for 'Fastest Time of the Day by a Brighton & Hove Car Club Member'. I keep the one with the helmet, the other i keep for a year and get my name engraved on. I should have had a third, like the Lydden one, for also winning my class, but they have some rule about not letting one guy get them all, so that went to the 2nd place guy. What a swiz! Razz

Anyway, hope i haven't bored you all Blah Blah

See you around perhaps, and come and say 'Hi' Cheers at the Speed Trials.

cheers

Andy Driving

Nice rx mate , Mine was dynoed at 430 with boost set to 1.2 bar so similiar sort of figures I am running a t04s with a nightsport street ported engine with v-mount.

Not many rx's around in the local area in fact I have only ever seen another 3 all the time I have had mine which is over a year and half now.

Keep up the good work.
